Client L #2
Exploring belonging, anger, & survivor guilt, client shifts toward self-acceptance in this NARM demo with Dr. Heller.
In this second NARM demonstration session with Client L, Dr. Heller begins by checking in, and Client L shares feeling generally fine while also navigating some emotional ups and downs. Client L brings two main concerns to the session: a persistent sense of not belonging or feeling fully human, and a strained relationship with one of their three brothers, whom they have been estranged from for over a year. As they discuss this family conflict, Client L reflects on feelings of guilt, confusion, and internal conflict around whether they handled the situation correctly. Dr. Heller supports Client L in exploring the emotional complexity of this dynamic, especially Client L's reactions to blame and anger, as well as their instinct to shut down.
As the session progresses, Dr. Heller supports Client L to more deeply connect with underlying emotions like outrage, disgust, and grief, along with associated bodily sensations, like internal heat and energy. These reactions reveal deeper themes of Client L's survivor guilt, their fear of taking up space, and a belief that their own aliveness might diminish others’ suffering. Client L explores feelings of cultural dislocation and begins to understand how intergenerational trauma may have shaped their emotional landscape. By the end of the session, Client L experiences a shift and reports feeling lighter, more self-accepting, and connected to their life energy, with a newfound sense of calm and permission to embrace their humanity without needing to be perfect.
